API Steel Application Center

Aiming to take its API steel business to the next level, POSCO opened the API Steel Application Center in May 2005 to develop future technologies through a multidisciplinary R&D program encompassing metallurgy, pipeforming, welding, and corrosion evaluation.
The center consists of three labs: the Pipeforming Lab, the Corrosion Evaluation Lab, and the Welding Lab.

1. The Pipeforming Lab

Equipped with the world’s first UOE simulator—an integrated forming press that handles bending, closing, and expansion—the Pipeforming Lab determines the physical property correlation between API steel and the formed pipe to help pipemakers achieve optimal manufacturing results.
The lab is also equipped with state-of-the-art “crack-tip opening displacement”, “drop-weight tear”, and “wide-plate tensile” testers to facilitate pipe research and performance evaluation.
