Billet Conditioning
To ensure high surface quality, wire rod surface
is to be inspected and any defects, if found, are to be
eliminated. After de-scaling with shot blast, billet surface
is subject to magnetic particle testing and visual inspection
for any defects. If found, defects are removed by a grinding
machine. In addition, ultrasonic tests as well as specification
and shape tests will follow in order to guarantee superior
internal quality.

Reheating Furnace
The reheating temperature and time are strictly
controlled to obtain proper quality in accordance with
steel types and usage. In particular, to prevent decarburization
which determines the surface quality, wire rod is preheated
at a low temperature for a sufficient period of time before
being rapidly switched over to hot temperature environment
for rolling.

Rolling
To meet customers' demands, such conditions as rolling
temperature, rolling reduction and rolling speed are rigorously
controlled.

Cooling
POSCO produces steel that satisfies different
demands made by customers by controlling recoiling temperature,
air cooling speed, slow cooling cover and other cooling
conditions. For example, in the case of high carbon wire
rod, lead patenting is not necessary because rapid cooling
makes fine grain structure, enhancing its freshness. As
for low carbon alloy steel, the soaking-cooled steel helps
our customers avoid the softening annealing process. |

Inspection
Test pieces are collected from cooled rods
and the samples undergo several tests involving specifications,
surface conditions and other qualities. POSCO manages
the entire process, ranging from packaging and labeling
to shipment. |
