1. Overview

Steel-framed house is the next-generation architecture for the 21st century, spreading rapidly through the US, Japan and other developed nations.  In Korea, the KS standard for materials (surface-treated lightweight steel for building structures, KSD3854) was set in 1997 and the construction standards were established in 1998.  By earning the certificates for strength, fire-proof and sound-proof capabilities from the Ministry of Construction and Transportation, the construction of villa-type 3 to 4-storied multi-family housing is now possible and the steel house engineering method was designated as a new architectural technology.

2. Key Features

Life span of 100 years

Steel house is strong enough to last three generations and the interior can be easily changed to meet the needs of family members or different life styles, guaranteeing high house value for 100 years.

Safe housing

Steel house can withstand earthquakes, fire, hurricanes and other natural disasters.

Exceptional beauty

Versatility of steel materials and applicability of finishing materials allow a variety of exterior and interior appearances to satisfy customers' architectural tastes

Spacious interior

Walls are thin but fully functional so consumers can enjoy more spacious interior than conventional houses of the same size.

Low maintenance cost

Outstanding insulation cuts down on cooling and heating costs as well as prevents pest invasion and torsion repairs from humidity differential, thus reducing overall maintenance costs

Speedy construction

Anyone can build a steel house easily and in a short time regardless of seasons or climates, ultimately slashing labor cost.

3. Steel Villas

As the Korean government reinforced the semi-agricultural land usage regulation, a follow-up measure to prevent reckless development of national territory, it became more difficult to build apartments taller than 5 stories.  An alternative was the creation of combined unit type low-rise garden-style housing complex targeted at foreigners and people with the same lifestyle.

Steel villas earned design standard and fireproof certificates as a new concept of housing that is less than four stories high and appropriate for pastoral lifestyle

POSCO and RIST completed a detailed design, which will serve as a new guideline for steel villa designs.
